5 Features of Effective Sales Copy

Have you heard about sales letters and wondered what they are exactly?  Maybe you have been asking yourself if you should write a long sales letter or a short sales letter.

A simple explanation of a sales letter is the combination of business writing and sales copy.  Writing sales copy is not easy for most writers though, because you need a good deal of sales experience and a great command of the language you are writing in for them to be effective.

The writer will also need to know a great deal about the audience they are writing for or the readers will not be able to relate to the sales copy, which will result in the sales letter having very little effect on the reader.  The writer will also need to know everything about the products and services so they can effectively describe the features and benefits to the audience.  To write sales copy that is compelling enough to get the reader to take the appropriate action takes a lot of experience.

Sales copy can be used for a direct mail piece, e-mail, ads or as it is more commonly used, for sales letters.  There are two types of sales letters, the short sales letter that is usually one page or less and the long sales letter which can be many pages depending upon the product.  Normally, the price of the product will determine the length of the sales letter.

Successful long sales letters have been written that can sell products that cost thousands of dollars.  So you can see, to be able to sell something for thousands of dollars from a sales letter, the copy must be very compelling.

Short sales letters are normally used for products that cost less than a hundred dollars because a lot of copy is not normally required for a product in that price range.

The best sales copy is written so the title and then each sentence following along with the paragraphs are structured so each one leads into the next one, which moves the reader down through the copy.  Effective sales copy is also written with a variety of fonts, sizes, colors, bolding, italics and bullet points.  Images are also used in sales copy to help drive home a point, because a picture is truly worth a thousand words.

When sales copy is written properly it will arouse interest in the product or service and often times make comparisons with competing products, plus list the features and benefits it provides that the other products do not have.  Testimonials or customer reviews will also help sales copy drastically provide credibility because they fulfill the logic phase, which all buyers go through when they try to justify purchasing and item.

Adding a guarantee and a no risk statement is a necessary component of a successful sales letter.  The guarantee will help the buyer logically justify the purchase.  Forgetting to add the elements that address the logic phase of the buying process will result in decreased sales and higher product return rates.

Urgency and scarcity will help speed the buying decision along because people do not want to think they are going to miss out on an opportunity.  Adding a bonus for the first few buyers will also accomplish this and can be coupled with the use of urgency.

The major part of a sales letter is the call to action, which should be added in multiple places throughout the sales letter, because buyers will decide to purchase at different times and for different reason so make it easy for them.  Make the buy now button large and bright so it is easy to see along with the price of the product or service.  The more a person has to search for the way to purchase the quicker they will give up, which will result in decreased sales.

By including all of these essential elements when writing your sales letter, it will greatly increase your odds for success.  If you feel that writing a sales letter is outside of your expertise you can have someone write it for you.  There are companies like Ozio Media that can provide this service for you.
