Running a successful social media campaign for your non-profit goes far beyond setting up a profile.

People are not going to flock to you; you must create a network and put in time, effort and work to gain a following.

To get the ball rolling, create your own network. Have members from each department in your organization set up a profile for their department.

Reach out to volunteers and donators and encourage them to connect with you and become members of your community. This extends your reach to their followers as well.

Use video and audio clips to reel in new followers. These are great ways to spread the word about your cause.

Video sharing is especially popular nowadays. Post video directly on your social media pages or provide a handy link.

Always use your logo for your profile picture. This way people can identify your non-profit by simply seeing your picture.

Your profiles need to be presentable at all times. This creates a great first impression and lets people know your profile is authentic.

Find people who are already promoting your cause on social media. Make sure these people are loyal supporters who have the best interest of your non-profit in mind.

Reach out to them and connect. If they are loyal supporters they’ll probably be willing to post links and share your content.

Once you have followers it’s important to stay connected. Posting consistently and providing up to date and beneficial information is a key to success.

Devote time each day to respond to comments and inquiries. If your profile becomes static you’ll lose followers, fail to gain new ones, and ultimately wreak havoc on your conversion rates.

As a non-profit, one of your most important goals on social media should be to convert followers into participants.

Always provide opportunities for your followers to donate, volunteer and become activists themselves. Post these opportunities regularly but don’t overdo it. If this is all you’re posting about, you’re likely to lose followers.

As a non-profit or any organization, what are you doing to succeed on social media and what defines success for you?
