Everywhere you look on the Internet you’ll find different answers on how to rank high in the search engines.  It is very hard to know where to concentrate your efforts to get your website ranking at the top of the search engines for the keywords that are most important in your industry.

“Content is King” is the new slogan circulating constantly over the world wide web, which would lead you to believe that if your content is high quality, your web pages will rank at the top of the search engines for the keywords that have been carefully placed throughout your article.

This is not really the case though, because even though your content can rank under keywords that were carefully placed it will not assure you of top ranking position, especially if there is a lot of competition for those keywords.

The way to assure that your web pages rank exactly where you want them, at the top of the search engine results pages, is to create high quality backlinks combined with high quality content to the pages you want ranked.  Sending the backlinks to the website is not enough because then the main page will rank and that page does not usually contain the information that the searchers are looking for, so they will just click off the page instead of searching through the website for what they were interested in.

With this information most people will begin to create backlinks from as many sites as they can find.  They will immediately try to find forums to create posts in or blogs to add comments with their link.

This is not a good strategy though because it will literally take thousands of backlinks from low quality sites to gain ranking, plus there is no chance of quality vertical traffic from a low quality site.  When using low quality sites many times the backlinks are not permanent because these types of sites come and go very quickly on the Internet and your backlinks will disappear with them.

One of the other problems is the No Follow tag that many websites use now, so when links are added no link juice is passed along the new link, resulting in a backlink that gives you absolutely no results.

Backlinks also need to look organic or natural to the search engines or the spiders that are continuously crawling the web indexing everything will quickly discount them or worse, penalize your website.

All of these things take time to understand and implement so your backlink campaign will be successful, which many businesses do not have.
