Have you realized the comments you leave on another blogger’s blog are content? Did you know the type of comments you leave and how you write them can say a lot about you?

The comments you leave on a blog can say a lot about you even if you don’t write anything personal. Comments that are too simple such as “nice post” or “great job” are often viewed as spam.

On the other hand, comments that are well constructed, free of spelling and grammatical errors, and offer an opinion, solution or are beneficial are viewed as genuine and let readers know that you’re offering value and not looking to add to your own list of followers.

Here are some basic tips to follow to leave a valuable blog post.

Motivation

What is your motivation? Simply understanding why you are leaving a comment can make writing easier. Do you have a difference of opinion? Something helpful to add? Is there a point you wish to expand on?

Context

Tell people what you are referring to in your comment whether it is a specific point or someone else’s comment.

Respect

Always write with respect even if you completely disagree with the post. Begin with a positive and then state your disagreement.

The Point

You may think the post is wonderful and it’s okay to let the author know but take your comment one step further by saying why. The same is true for the opposite. Instead of saying, “I disagree” say, “I disagree because . . .”

Confidence

Write with confidence and know what you are talking about. Offering a guess isn’t likely to garner you much attention. Your comments should offer something of value.

Length

Keep your comments short and to the point. When it comes to reading comments, most people have short attention spans. Establish your point and move on.

Proofread

Always check for spelling and grammatical errors. If you spell something wrong people will not take you as seriously. This is pertinent if your motivation is to establish yourself as an expert in the subject.
